AI tool sprawl

AI tool sprawl is the uncontrolled growth of AI assistants, agents and LLM tools across an organization, faster than anyone can inventory, own or review them.

Also known as: AI sprawl

How it builds up

AI tool sprawl follows the pattern of every self-service capability before it. Adoption is easy, nothing retires a tool once it is in use, and the count climbs past the point where ad hoc review keeps up. Teams sign up for assistants, makers build agents, and licences are bought in several places at once.

What is new is that these tools reach data and act on a user's behalf, so each new one widens the set of places your data can flow to.

Why one inventory matters

An organization rarely sprawls in one tool. It runs Microsoft 365 Copilot alongside other assistants and specialized AI services, so controlling sprawl means one inventory across the whole stack, each tool with an owner, a purpose and a review date. Without that, the same questions get answered separately per vendor, if at all.
