Agent sprawl

Agent sprawl is the uncontrolled growth of AI agents across an organization, created and shared faster than anyone inventories, owns or reviews them.

Also known as: AI agent sprawl, Copilot agent sprawl

The next sprawl

Agent sprawl repeats what happened with sites, Teams and Power Apps. Default settings let every licensed user build agents and share them, so agents multiply without a request, an owner or an end date. Some are duplicates, many are experiments that were never retired, and a few are grounded on content their audience should not see.

Why it is a risk and a cost

Each agent can reach data and act, so every ungoverned agent widens the attack surface. Agents also consume capacity and pay-as-you-go credits, so sprawl shows up on the bill. And an agent whose maker has left keeps running, with nobody accountable for what it does.

The same questions apply as to any workspace: who created it, why, who uses it, what it can reach, what it costs and who retires it.

Where Rencore fits

Rencore inventories Copilot Studio and SharePoint agents, with the owners, sharing and usage of each Copilot Studio agent. It flags agents without an owner and agents nobody uses, and shows agents shared with everyone, so you can retire them before they add up.
