Copilot agent

A Copilot agent is a custom, task-specific assistant built on Microsoft Copilot Studio or the Microsoft 365 Copilot agent builder that combines instructions, knowledge sources and actions to automate a piece of work.

Also known as: Copilot Studio agent, Microsoft 365 agent, custom agent

What an agent is made of

An agent bundles instructions, knowledge sources such as SharePoint sites or files, and actions such as flows or connector calls. It can read organizational data, call connectors and act on a user's behalf, which is what makes it useful and what makes it a governance concern.

Agents can be built by IT, by professional makers in Copilot Studio, or by any licensed user in the agent builder, and they can be shared with colleagues or the whole organization.

The governance questions

When anyone can create an agent, agents accumulate faster than anyone reviews them. Each one has permissions, knowledge sources and an owner that should be known. Governing agents means keeping an inventory of what exists, checking what each one can reach and who it is shared with, and giving each one an owner and an end of life before sprawl sets in.

Where Rencore fits

Rencore lists Copilot Studio agents with their owners, knowledge sources, actions and sharing, so you can find agents shared with everyone, agents grounded on sensitive sites and agents whose owner has left.
