Microsoft Entra Agent ID

Microsoft Entra Agent ID is a Microsoft Entra capability that gives AI agents their own identities in the directory, so that they can be authenticated, granted access and governed like users and applications.

Also known as: Entra Agent ID, Agent ID, agent identity

Why agents need identities

Many agents act with the permissions of the user who runs them or of a shared service account. That makes it hard to tell what an agent did, to limit what it may reach or to switch it off without affecting people. A dedicated identity per agent lets administrators apply the same controls they use elsewhere, such as Conditional Access, access reviews and sign-in logs.

How it fits with other Microsoft tools

As Microsoft has announced, Agent ID covers agents built in Copilot Studio and its other agent platforms and is one of the building blocks of Agent 365. The identity answers who the agent is. Questions about what it should be allowed to read, who owns it and whether it is still needed remain governance work for the organization.
