AI agent
An AI agent is a software system that uses a language model to pursue a goal with some autonomy, combining instructions, access to data or tools, and the ability to act on a user's behalf.
Also known as: autonomous agent, LLM agent
From assistant to actor
The word covers a lot of ground, from a scripted assistant that answers questions about one SharePoint site to a system that plans and runs multi-step tasks against live business systems. In Microsoft 365 the most common agents are built in Copilot Studio, in the Copilot agent builder or on a SharePoint site. Outside Microsoft, teams build them on other AI platforms and in code.
What every agent shares is the combination that makes it useful and risky at once: a model, access to data or tools, and permission to act.
Why an agent is a governance object
Whatever data an agent can reach, it can surface or act on. So governing agents comes down to the questions you already ask of a Team or a Power App: who created it, who owns it, what it can reach, who uses it, what it costs, and whether it is still needed. An agent whose maker has left the organization keeps running with the access it was given.
Where Rencore fits
Rencore inventories the agents built in Copilot Studio and on SharePoint sites, together with their owners, knowledge sources and actions, so you can see which agents exist, who is accountable for each one and which ones reach sensitive content.
