Power BI governance
Power BI governance is the set of policies and controls an organization applies to Power BI workspaces, reports, dashboards and datasets so that they have owners, are shared appropriately, are classified and are removed when no longer used.
Also known as: Power BI workspace governance, PBI governance
What it covers
Power BI content lives in workspaces, each with admins, members and viewers. Governance decides who may create workspaces, who administers them, which reports may be shared with external users or published to the web, which data needs a classification and when inactive reports and datasets are cleaned up.
Why it matters
Reports often carry the most sensitive numbers a company has, and self-service BI makes it easy to copy them into new workspaces and share them widely. Workspaces whose admins have left, datasets nobody owns and reports shared outside the company are the typical findings when someone finally looks.
Where Rencore fits
Rencore policies flag Power BI workspaces without administrators, workspaces and dashboards with external access, reports without a classification, inactive workspaces and reports, orphaned datasets and empty workspaces. A quarterly access review asks owners to confirm who should keep access to each workspace.
