Orphaned workspace
An orphaned workspace is a Team, SharePoint site or Microsoft 365 group that has no active owner, usually because its owners left or their accounts were disabled.
Also known as: ownerless workspace, orphaned Team, orphan site
How workspaces lose their owners
Most workspaces start with one owner, the person who created them. When that person leaves or changes role and nobody is promoted, the workspace keeps its members, content and sharing links, but nobody is accountable for them. Disabled accounts can still appear as owners, which hides the problem in a simple owner count.
Why it matters
Without an owner, nobody approves new members, answers an access review, renews or archives the workspace, or notices that its content is overshared. Orphaned workspaces are where stale content and forgotten guests collect.
Most cases are prevented by two practices, requiring at least two owners per workspace and handing over ownership as part of the leaver process.
Where Rencore fits
Rencore policies flag Teams without owners, Teams with fewer than two owners and Teams whose owners are all disabled and send notification emails; an automation can add a new owner.
