Sensitivity label
A sensitivity label is a Microsoft Purview classification that marks how sensitive a file, email, site, Team or Microsoft 365 group is and enforces protection such as encryption, access restrictions and visual markings.
Also known as: Purview sensitivity label, MIP label, data classification label
Two jobs at once
A label classifies content and protects it. A file labelled "Confidential" can carry encryption, access restrictions and a watermark that stay with it wherever it goes. Applied to a Team, a site or a Microsoft 365 group, a container label sets privacy, guest access and external sharing for the whole workspace.
Why labels matter for Copilot
Labels give people and tools one consistent signal. Microsoft 365 Copilot shows the label of the content it uses and respects the usage rights an encrypting label grants, so consistent, accurate labelling keeps the most sensitive material out of answers for people who should not see it.
Inconsistent labelling leaves protection to chance. Unlabelled sensitive content, and workspaces whose label no longer fits what they hold, are where exposure hides.
Where Rencore fits
Rencore reports the sensitivity label on Teams, sites, groups and files, so you can find workspaces without a label or with one that does not fit, and its automations can set the label on a Microsoft 365 group.
