Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft 365 Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant inside Teams, Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint and the other Microsoft 365 apps, which answers and acts using large language models grounded on the organization's data through Microsoft Graph.
Also known as: M365 Copilot, Copilot for Microsoft 365
How it uses your data
Copilot works with the permissions of the signed-in user. When someone asks a question, it retrieves the mails, chats, files and meetings that person can access through Microsoft Graph and uses them to answer. It does not grant new access, but it makes existing access far easier to use.
Copilot is a paid add-on licence per user, on top of an eligible Microsoft 365 plan. Agents built in Copilot Studio and the agent builder extend it.
What to govern before and after rollout
Before rollout: oversharing, sensitivity labels and stale content, because everything a user can open becomes answerable. After rollout: who uses the licences, which agents appear, what they reach and what they cost. Organizations that skip the first step often limit Copilot to a small pilot group while they clean up.
Where Rencore fits
Rencore helps prepare a tenant for Copilot by finding and closing overshared content and checking labels, then reports Copilot usage per user, active users over time and licence cost by department, so you can see who uses the licences and reassign the ones that sit idle.
