Microsoft 365 governance plan
A Microsoft 365 governance plan is a documented set of rules, roles and processes that defines how an organization creates, uses, shares, secures and retires its Microsoft 365 workspaces and services.
Also known as: governance framework, governance strategy, governance operating model, Teams governance plan
What belongs in it
A workable plan answers a short list of questions. Who may create a Team or site, and from which templates? How are workspaces named and classified? How many owners does each need? Who may invite guests and share externally? When is a workspace reviewed, archived or deleted? Who decides about Copilot, agents and Power Platform apps?
It also names the roles: a governance board or owner, the IT administrators, and the business owners who answer for each workspace.
Keeping the plan alive
Most plans fail in operation, after they are written, because rules that nobody checks stop being followed. The plan needs a way to measure the tenant against each rule, a way to fix or escalate what does not comply and a regular review of the rules themselves as Microsoft adds features.
Where Rencore fits
In Rencore the rules of a governance plan become policies, for example on owners, external users or names; automations act on violations; provisioning templates apply the plan to new Teams and sites; and access reviews put the recurring checks on a schedule.
