Microsoft 365 governance

Microsoft 365 governance is the framework of policies, automated controls and oversight processes an organization applies to its Microsoft 365 tenant to keep it secure, compliant, cost-efficient and usable.

Also known as: M365 governance, Office 365 governance, collaboration governance

What it covers

The scope follows the workloads. It includes how Teams and SharePoint sites are created, named, owned and retired; who can share with whom inside and outside the company; how licenses are assigned; how users and guests join and leave; and, increasingly, how Copilot, agents and Power Platform apps use all of this.

Most frameworks sort the work into security, compliance, cost and adoption, and assign each rule an owner on the business side as well as in IT.

From rules to routine

Microsoft supplies many of the controls, spread across the Microsoft 365, SharePoint, Teams, Entra and Purview admin centers. Governance is the work of deciding which settings apply, checking continuously that the tenant still matches them and fixing what drifts. In a large tenant that checking only works when it is automated.

Where Rencore fits

Rencore Governance builds one inventory of Teams, SharePoint, OneDrive, Microsoft 365 groups, users, Entra ID applications, Power Platform and Copilot, checks it with policies, fixes violations with automations, runs access reviews and provisions new workspaces from templates.
