Microsoft Teams governance
Microsoft Teams governance is the set of policies, processes and controls an organization uses to manage how Teams are created, named, owned, shared with guests and retired.
Also known as: Teams governance, MS Teams governance
What it covers
Every Team is backed by a Microsoft 365 group, a SharePoint site and often channels with their own sites, so Teams governance reaches well beyond the chat client. The usual topics are who may create Teams, which templates and naming rules apply, whether a Team is public or private, how many owners it needs, which guests and shared channel members it has and what happens when it falls silent.
Why it matters
Teams are created quickly and rarely deleted. Without rules a tenant collects thousands of them, many without active owners, some public by default and some full of guests nobody remembers inviting. All of that content is searchable by Copilot for anyone who has access.
Where Rencore fits
Rencore provisions Teams from templates with an approval step, and its policies flag Teams without owners or with fewer than two, public Teams, Teams with external users, shared channels with external access, prohibited words in names and inactive Teams. Automations archive unused Teams and set Teams to private by default, and access reviews ask reviewers to confirm each Team's members.
