WKO at a glance

WKO, the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, began its IT transformation in 2019 by setting up a Microsoft 365 Competence Centre. Its in-house IT service provider, WKO Inhouse GmbH, runs the Microsoft 365 estate that WKO and its regional chambers work in.

When COVID-19 pushed Microsoft Teams across the organisation, a self-built PowerShell solution carried the rollout. Adoption kept climbing, the script kept growing, and the estate outgrew what one script could hold.

Background

An estate that outgrew its scripts

The Competence Centre gave WKO's regional chambers a common digital workplace, provisioned by PowerShell the team had written itself. That worked while the estate was small.

As adoption spread across the chambers, the script passed 6,000 lines of code. Provisioning logic lived in code that one team maintained by hand, which put a ceiling on how far the estate could grow.

The challenge

What the IT team could not see or control

Five problems came out of the same root cause: the rules for the estate lived in a script rather than in policy.

Lifecycle management Teams and SharePoint resources had no clear provisioning or deprovisioning path.
Orphaned resources Sites without an owner kept running, and carried security and compliance risk with them.
Scale The PowerShell solution had grown past 6,000 lines of code and was difficult to maintain.
No single view There was no central view of the state of the estate.
Manual work Governance tasks were reactive and consumed IT time that had better uses.

Where WKO takes it next

WKO plans to extend coverage to Power Platform, Planner and Intune, and is looking at Microsoft Copilot and Copilot Studio. Azure Secure Score and Rencore's newer capabilities sit on the same roadmap.
